How Wakeboarding Sharpened My Focus and Grew My Business – Adam Cherrington’s Tips

As the founder of Cherrington Media, I often encounter questions like how I manage to keep my focus sharp enough to grow a successful business.

My secret weapon? Wakeboarding. This intense water sport has taught me invaluable lessons that I apply to my work every day.

I first got into wakeboarding during college. I was looking for a challenge that would push me out of my comfort zone.

The learning curve was steep. My first attempts usually ended with a bruising face-plant into the water.

But I was hooked on the thrill of cutting back and forth behind the boat, focused intensely on the thin wake.

After a few weeks of practice, I noticed wakeboarding demanded total concentration and awareness. If my mind wandered for even a second, I’d lose my edge and wipe out.

This need for complete focus mirrored what it takes to manage a growing company like Cherrington Media.

When I’m wakeboarding, there’s no room for distraction.

I have to block out everything except the boat’s subtle movements and the feeling of the water beneath me. I’m wholly present in that moment, focused on that next turn.

This intensity of focus taught me invaluable lessons I apply to growing my affiliate marketing business every day.

With Cherrington Media expanding rapidly, I need to juggle many complex moving parts – from overseeing campaigns to coordinating with clients and affiliates.

If I lose focus, even for a short time, the momentum of my business growth can stall.

But by staying intensely present, just like I do while wakeboarding, I can manage a company that has grown over 800% in just a few short years.

Adam Cherrington- Learning to Fall Without Fear Encouraged Me to Take Business Risks

When you’re flying 20 feet in the air behind a boat, wipeouts and tumbles into the water are inevitable.

In the early days of learning wakeboarding, I often hesitated before attempting an advanced trick, fearful of falling.

But over time, I learned to fall without fear. I knew the water would cushion me, and I’d pop back up, ready to try again.

This taught me to take smart risks in business without immobilizing fear of failure.

With affiliate marketing, you have to take risks on new campaigns, partnerships, and traffic sources without knowing if they’ll pay off.

In the early days of Cherrington Media, a risk that didn’t pan out would leave me dejected.

But wakeboarding taught me that failure is part of progress.

Now, just like falling in the water when attempting a new trick while wakeboarding, I pick myself up after a business risk doesn’t pan out and get back to work – without dwelling on the failure.

This gives me the courage to keep expanding my company into new and untested directions.

Pushing Past Perceived Limits Helped Me Scale My Business At Cherrington Media

When I first started wakeboarding, certain tricks seemed impossible.

The flips, spins, and grabs the pros made look effortless appeared completely out of reach.

But progressively I stretched my abilities. Tricks that once seemed unattainable I can now land consistently.

This taught me an invaluable mindset I leverage while growing my Cherrington Media business – reject limiting beliefs about what you can accomplish.

When I launched my affiliate marketing company, I set what felt like hugely ambitious goals for revenue and team size.

At times, escalating my company to that scale seemed out of reach.

But by focusing and persevering, just like stretching to learn new wakeboarding tricks, I’ve been able to rapidly grow Cherrington Media beyond what I once thought possible.

Wakeboarding Aligns Body and Mind to Run a Business Just Like Cherrington Media

As an intense, full-body sport, wakeboarding taught me the importance of physical fitness for mental acuity.

After a long day of wakeboarding, I feel tired but also exceptionally clear-headed.

I realized keeping my body physically active is crucial to maintaining the intense focus needed to run a high-growth business.

Now, I’m diligent about squeezing in wakeboarding sessions as often as I can.

The physical intensity realigns my body and mind, allowing me to channel energy into staying intensely focused on business growth.

When I’ve gone too long without wakeboarding, I notice my clarity of mind starts to slip.

So wakeboarding continues to sharpen my abilities to concentrate and cut through distractions – invaluable skills that allow me to successfully manage a rapidly expanding company.

My passion for outside work directly fuels my capacity to grow within work. It’s an invaluable lesson for any entrepreneur – the activities that challenge you physically also expand your mental capabilities.
